An Excellent French History of Great Britain in a Handsome Vellum Binding

Paul Rapin de Thoyras. Histoire D'Angleterre. The Hague: Chez Alexandre de Rogissart, 1724-1727. First Edition. Ten quarto volumes. Engravings by F. M. la Cave. Text in French. Approximately 11 x 8 inches. With five engraved portraits, five folding maps, seven folding tables and five plates (one folding) inserted throughout. Beautifully bound in contemporary full vellum, boards decoratively ruled and paneled in gilt, gilt floral central stamp, spines tooled in leather in compartments, brown and black gilt morocco lettering labels, six raised bands, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Boards generally bowed outward with corresponding expansion to fore-edges of text blocks; moderate wear and chipping to extremities though spines still intact, corners occasionally bumped and turned; joints cracking and peeling with occasional surface loss, scattered foxing mostly to prelims and occasionally to text or plate margins. Still, a very good set of this remarkable achievement, which covers the period from Ancient Britain to the rule of Charles II.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
