Mao Zedong. [Tian Xiao Guang, Editor]. Mao Zhu Xi Yu Lu [Quotations from Chairman Mao]. [Possibly Beijing]: General Political Department, [1964]. First edition. Twelvemo (4 x 5.375 inches). [8], 2, 250, [2, blank] pages. With frontispiece portrait and facsimile of calligraphic endorsement by Lin Biao. In original wrappers, with titles in black within a red box and publisher information along bottom and title in red with star at spine. Wrappers mildly toned with soil and a blue ink stain at front panel; edges worn, especially along bottom edge of front, some bruising to rear panel along fore edge. Notations in pen, in Chinese, at half title and title page. A very good copy of a fragile item.

The true first edition of what would come to be known as "The Little Red Book" with endorsement by Lin Biao that was later ordered to be excised from the text after his alleged assassination attempt on Chairman Mao. Predating the iconic red vinyl wraps, "Although the text for both bindings appear to be identical, according to Ms. Tian those in printed paper wrappers were released first while the vinyl plastic covers were still being designed/manufactured and its copies required a sturdier binding. These followed within days: the printed wrappers were intended for individual high ranking officers while the red vinyl covers were for use by brigade teams of up to eight men" [Oliver Lein Han, Sources and Early Printing History of Chairman Mao's "Quotations," The Bibliographic Society of America].
