Folio (12.375 x 7.75 inches; 314 x 197 mm). [40], 407, [1, blank], [11, index], [1, blank] pages. With engraved frontispiece portrait of Locke. Contemporary full panelled calf rebacked to style retaining original spine compartments and lettering piece, triple-filleted rectangular frame with floral tools stamped in blind at the corners, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, gilt calf lettering piece, five raised bands, gilt board edges, printer's waste utilized as pastedowns, all edges speckled red. Engraved armorial bookplate of Robert Duncombe Shafto (M.P. for North Durham, 1847-1868) affixed to front pastedown. Occasional marginal soiling. Overall a very good copy. A handsome copy of this important work, the foundational text of modern empiricism and arguably Locke's most well-known treatise. ESTC R21459. Pforzheimer, 601. Wing L2740.
