Folio. Approximately 15.5 x 9.5 inches. [vi], 71, [1, blank], 251, [1, blank], [22], 52 [actually 46], [34] pages. Title-page printed in red and black, engraved chapter ornaments and capitals. Contemporary full brown calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine elaborately tooled in gilt, black gilt morocco lettering label, six raised bands, gilt board-edges, all edges stained red. Some wear, soiling to binding, front joint cracking, front hinge starting (yet still quiet solid), rear joint just cracking at upper and lower edges. Internally very bright. Near fine.

    This rare history of England describes the peoples of ancient Britain, pre-Christian events, the Roman conquest, Suetonius' encounter with the warrior queen Boudica, the Saxon invasions, and the battles of King Arthur and his overthrow of the Romans. The Appendix makes references to Merlin and the Treatise of Fayries and Incubi. The Breviary has a separate title-page dated 1573. ESTC t113293. Lowndes III 1352.
