    Description

Jacques Callot. Les Miseres et les mal-heurs... et mise en lumiere par Israel son amy. Paris: 1633. First edition, second issue, with plate numbers and captions, on watermarked paper. Complete in eighteen plates (including engraved title). Oblong octavo (3.75 x 7.75 inches; 94 x 197 mm.). Each plate neatly mounted onto a backing sheet of the same size at right and left margins. Plates toned, with some edgewear, occasional soiling and creasing. Plate 3 is torn at the upper and lower corners of the right side, but the torn portions are still present. All plates are mounted (removable) onto modern larger backing sheets. Very good. Housed together in a modern black morocco portfolio with ribbon and sword ornament enclosure. This is one of the first European works to depict the horrors of war and its terrible effects on the civilian population (in this case, the Thirty Years' War, when Cardinal Richelieu sent his army to occupy Callot's home of Lorraine, before its annexation to France).
