The Copy of a British Army Officer with Letters from H. G. Wells

    H. G. Wells. A Short History of the World. London: Cassell and Company, 1922. First edition. C. E. Carrington's copy with two autograph letters signed from the author laid in. Super royal octavo. xvi, 432 pages, with numerous intertextual illustrations. Publisher's blue cloth stamped and lettered in gilt. Letters dated January 23 and April 1 of 1923, on Wells's Easton Glebe stationery and Mac-Mahon Palace Hotel stationery respectively. With Carrington's note of provenance. Covers rubbed, split at upper-half of joints with backstrip partially detached, spine faded, gentle spine lean, edges worn, corners bumped. Piece excised from front endpaper, following leaf cut, endpapers foxed. Previous owner signature and brief holographic notations to front paste down. Letters stapled together at upper-left corner, with note of provenance and excised piece of endpaper. Each folded in eighths as mailed, with some additional creasing at corners and edges, some small chips. Very good overall. Hammond E22. Wells 77. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells, with McMurtry's bookplate.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
