Lugduni: Theobaldum Paganum, 1541. Prefatory letter and index by Desiderius Erasmus. Text in Latin. Octavo. 528, [32] pages. Page 204 misnumbered 104. Decorated device for the heirs of Simonis Vincentii on title page, publisher's device of Theobaldum Paganum on last page, decorated initials, and a larger inhabited initial on page 14. Later full calf, gilt braid borders, gilt edges, five gilt ruled bands to spine and leather spine label, marbled endpapers. Rubbing to boards, some surface leather loss, holograph date label near head of spine, "Suetonni" in holograph on fore- and upper edges of text block, fading pen inscriptions on title page, dampstains, occasional stains and foxing, small hole from biopredation near gutter of n4 through to r6, not affecting text, few pen underlines and markings, smudged pen inscriptions on last page around publisher's device, else in very good condition. Suetonius' Lives of the Twelve Caesars was a primary source used by Robert Graves when writing his highly acclaimed 1934 novel I, Claudius. From the Collection of Ellis MacGregor Pryce-Jones.
