    History of Pirates

Capt. Charles Johnson. The History of the Pirates, Containing the Lives of Those Noted Pirate Captains, Mission, Bowen, Kidd, Tew, Halsey, White, Condent, Bellamy, Fly, Howard, Lewis, Cornelius, Williams, Burgess, North and Their Several Crews. London, Printed, Norwich [Connecticut]: Re-Printed by R. Hubbard, 1814.

First American edition. Twelvemo. 288 pages.

Contemporary leather binding with later added title label on the spine. Front joint slightly cracked; rear joint tender. Extremities worn, most noticeably at the corners and spine ends. Moderate dampstaining, soiling, and foxing throughout, though the text block is sound. Lower right corner of page 229/230 missing, slightly affecting text. On balance, a very good copy.

There is speculation that the author, "Capt. Johnson," is, in fact, a pseudonym for Daniel Defoe, though this is disputed by many scholars. Nonetheless, this present work capitalizes on the fascination with highwaymen, pirates, and other infamous men of the period. The work also deals with other notable pirates of the day including William Cunningham, John Augur, William Dowling, and others who were "tried, condemned and executed at Nassau, New-Providence, on Friday, the 12th of October, 1718." Additionally a description of Magadoxa, in Ethiopia is given.

    Sabin, 36191.
