A Marvelous Treatise on Foreign Orders of Knighthood Printed by William Jaggard

Andrew Favine. The Theater of Honour and Knight-Hood. Or a Compendious Chronicle and Historie of the Whole Christian World. London: William Jaggard, 1623. First English edition.. Title page printed in red and black. Folio. Two volumes in one. [18], [24], 572, 1-538 pages. 12 pages of woodcut illustrations printed on the recto only and bound in front. Scores of additional woodcuts in text. Contemporary calf with modest floral borders embossed on the boards and titles and decoration stamped in gilt in six compartments between five raised bands on the spine. Text block solid, the contents bright with moderate toning and scattered foxing to the edges of the pages. Contemporary name in ink "Tho: Cotton" appears twice on the title page. Former owner's small armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Boards with the usual wear along the edges and corners, otherwise very good. Published two years earlier in French, this wonderful treatise on foreign orders of knighthood is lavishly illustrated with woodblock illustrations of arms, emblazons, escutcheons, and crowns.

    More Information:

The work is divided into ten books discussing the armorial specifics of France, Flanders and the Low Countries, England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Florence, and the Holy Land. The last chapter is perhaps the most fascinating with its specific instructions on the protocol for duels, jousts, challenges of honor and instructions on meting out of punishments and executions. This work may also be of interest to the Shakespearian scholar as it was printed by the same printer later in the same year that printed the First Folio.
