    Description

[WWI]. WWI Diary of Martin Shaw. 1917-1919. The soldier, Martin Shaw, happily recalls his time as a cadet at Blackdown camp and Hastings (among others) and includes detailed drawings of uniforms and camp layouts. Then the diary takes a more somber tone as Shaw describes his time in France, saying "All the time I was in the Army I was lucky to be gradually lifted into the horrors of the war" and "Still we passed on and plodded along through the dark with that feeling you get in a nightmare when you get chased by an enormous lobster with the face of a chance acquaintance who you haven't thought of for years, and you can't seem to make any progress at all to get away from him." Bound in plain cloth. A bit soiled. Very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
