[Sargent-Marceau]. Antoine Louis François Sargent. Portraits des grands hommes, femmes illustres, et sujets mémorables de France. Gravés et imprimés en couleurs. Paris: Chez Blin, Imprimeur en Taille-Douce, [approximately 1786-92]. First edition. Folio (13.5 x 9.5 inches; 343 x 245 mm.). Vignette title-page, dedication and 192 leaves of colored plates in pairs. The first of each pair is a full-page oval portrait, followed by a half-page engraving with text. Contemporary calf decorated in gilt; gilt-stamped fillet and inner dentelle decorations; black spine label and five raised bands. Marbled endpapers. Edges rough-trimmed. Minor wear at edges, hinges; corners softly bumped; some scuffing, very small gouges to boards. Slight staining around, repairs to inner hinges. Recased; plates reinforced at gutter. Some edge wear, scattered foxing, thumbsoiling throughout text block; occasional damp staining toward bottom, repaired tears and chips at margins; none affecting images or text. With book labels of Lucius Wilmerding and Brian Douglas Stilwell on front pastedown. Very good. Text in French. Includes plate entitled "Indépendance des États-Unis," describing the events of the American Revolution from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to peace, with particular emphasis on the French contribution to American liberty and the erection of a monument to Louis XVI in Philadelphia. Translated, it reads: "This example is all the more memorable, as past centuries offer no other example of Republics raising monuments to the glory of Sovereigns." Cohen-de Ricci 951-2.
