[Samuel Johnson]. James Boswell. The Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Comprehending an Account of His Studies and Numerous Works... London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition, with "give" on page 135 of the first volume, corrected from "gve." Two volumes; quarto (10.875 x 8.5 inches; 275 x 215 mm.). xii, [16], 516; [ii], 588 [i.e. 586] pages; engraved frontis portrait of Johnson in the first volume, two plates (Round Robin addressed to Samuel Johnson and Fac Similes of Dr. Johnson's hand writing) inserted in Volume II. Modern antique-style mottled leather; spines ruled and tooled in gilt with gilt-lettered leather labels in red and green; old, repurposed endpapers. Boards with some trivial wear, some minor surface scratches to the rear board of Volume II; corners softly bumped. Endpapers with some old offsetting from an unrelated source. Upper edge of the gutter margin in the first volume with a faint dampstain to the frontispiece and first few gatherings; text of the second volume with a faint (usually quite so) tidemark to the upper margin and top corner of the fore-margin, seldom affecting any text (and seemingly only headlines or folios); faint discoloration to the margins of the title-leaves from leather. Near fine. One of the most important advancements in biographical literature. Grolier, 100 English, 65. From a Private Collection in St. Charles, IL.
