Frontispiece and several hundred other inserted engraved plates, most with original protective tissue inserts. Title vignette, decorative rules. Fairly contemporary three-quarter red morocco with red cloth-covered boards; gilt ruling at edge of morocco; spines stamped in gilt with three raised bands. Top edges trimmed and gilt; others rough-trimmed. Bindings worn at hinges with repairs visible to first volume, rear board of tenth volume completely detached. General darkening of spines; chipping to heads and feet of some backstrips; rubbing to raised bands. Edge wear to boards, marginal toning, particularly at morocco. Browning to edges of text block, extreme fore-edges of pages. Scattered foxing throughout, including to tissue; some offsetting opposite plates. Good bindings with very good interiors. A portrait of the Louvre's collections at a time of intense acquisition, during the expansion of the French empire under Napoleon I. From the Illustrated Book Collection of David Salinas.
