    [From the library of Charles Dickens]. Rev. G. R. Gleig. The History of the British Empire in India. London: John Murray, 1830. (Last three volumes 1835.) Four volumes, duodecimo (5.75 x 3.75 inches; 142 x 95 mm.). [2], viii, 365, [1]; [2], vii, [1], 354, [2]; [2], viii, 328, [2]; [2], viii, 324, [2] pages. Portrait frontispieces in all volumes, with five additional inserted plates and a folding map in the first. First volume frontispiece and plates signed by E. Finden. Contemporary half red morocco with marbled paper-covered boards, front and back stamped in blind, spine in gilt. Edges of text block and endpapers marbled. Two-piece slipcase, half green morocco over green cloth, stamped in gilt. Some mild wear to binding, particularly corners, edges and hinges. Front board of first volume detaching, split two-thirds of the way up the hinge. Some minor wear to corners and edges of slipcase; spine side faded from green to light brown. Mild offsetting, very minor foxing to folding map in first volume. Very good. Charles Dickens's copy, all four volumes with his bookplate (a lion couchant holding a Maltese cross) and label, which reads, "From the Library of Charles Dickens, Gadshill Place, June, 1870."
