Burke's Masterful Reaction to the French Revolution

[French Revolution]. Edmund Burke. Reflections on the Revolution in France, and on the Proceedings in Certain Societies in London Relative to that Event. In a Letter intended to have been sent to a Gentleman in Paris. London: J. Dodsley, 1790. Second edition, second impression (with the misspelling "ascertainmennt" on page 223, line 23), though the first two editions were printed within days of each other. Octavo. iv, 356 pages. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked with elaborate gilt stamping, and gilt titles on a red morocco spine label. Minor wear to the boards. Near-contemporary bookplate and ownership signature to front endpapers. Minimal scattered foxing and toning, mostly to the first and last few leaves. Inner text largely very clean. A very attractive copy "one of the most brilliant of polemics" (PMM), in very good condition. From a private collection from New Orleans.

    More Information:

Burke's most celebrated work, and one of the greatest polemics in the English language. "The effect of the `Reflections' was extraordinary. It created a reaction against the revolution; it divided Englishmen into two parties and did much to ruin the Whigs, and to produce a new political combination. Abroad [it] created no less stir than at home, and Burke received the compliments of different foreign sovereigns. His political foresight is exhibited by his prophecy of the time when, all restraints that mitigate despotism being removed, France would fall a prey to arbitrary power." - DNB 3, 358; PMM 239; Lowndes 316; Todd 53c.
