An Early French Edition of Cavendish

[Equestrian Training]. William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle. Methode Nouvelle, et Invention Extraordinaire de Dresser Les Chevaux... London: Thomas Milbourn, 1671.

Early French edition, following the first English edition printed in 1667. Folio. [1] title, [1] blank, [2] dedication, [11] introduction, [1] advertisement, 428 pages, plus a four-page list of German, Italian, Spanish, and French horse names. Woodcut capitals and chapter head and tailpieces.

Contemporary vellum binding with a later morocco spine label mounted in one of seven compartments between six raised bands on the spine. Though the front board is warped the binding has affected a warm uniform patination and is in remarkable condition. The contents are largely sound with only scattered trivial toning and foxing, the latter mainly on the title page. Modern bookplate mounted to the front pastedown. On balance, a superb copy in near fine condition.

This is Cavendish's second work, often confused with the 1657 Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser Les Chevaux. The second work was printed without any of the extraordinary plates found in the 1657 edition. In his forward to this second work, Cavendish writes that it is "ce livre icy n'est ny une traduction de l'autre ny une addition qui luy soit necessaire; mais peut servir seul, et sans l'assistance du premier..." [neither a translation of the first, nor an absolutely necessary addition to it, [it] may be of use by itself, without the other].
