A Rare Early Edition of Hall's Chronicle of England - an Important Shakespearian Source Book

[Edward Hall]. The Union of the Two Noble and Illustre Famelies of Lancastre & Yorke... London: Richard Grafton, 1550. Early edition (possibly the second) of this massive English history. Quarto. Approximately 10.25 x 7 inches. [viii], 50, [2, Table], 102, [3, Table], [1, blank], 61, [4, Table], [1, blank], 24], [1, Table], 35, [2, Table (continuation)], [1, blank], 61, [1, blank], [3, Table], [1, blank], 263, [3, Table] fols. Title-page, and the first twenty nine leaves, as well as fols. 13-24 in the chapter on King Henry the VII are supplied in facsimile. Contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, later black gilt morocco lettering label. Rebacked, preserving most of the original spine, newer corners and endleaves, some toning, wear and soiling to original text leaves. Embossed previous owner's stamp on a new front blank. A fair copy.
This Chronicle is an important Shakespearian source book, supplying information for much of Shakespeare's histories. Hall was a supporter of King Henry VIII (as evidence by the largest chapter in this book devoted to him), and this led to his work being banned by the Catholic queen, Mary. This is why so few of these early editions survive. STC 12723.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
