Description
Deng Xiaoping Signed Copy of Mao Tsetung's "Little Red Book." Upon Coming to Power, Deng Would Diminish the Book's Cultural Influence in Favor of Economic Development
[Deng Xiaoping, Signed]. Mao Tsetung. Quotations from
Chairman Mao Tsetung. Peking: Foreign Languages Press,
1972.16mo (2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches; 62 x 89 mm). Publisher's flexible red vinyl wrappers stamped in gilt, red ribbon marker. Illustrated with a photographic portrait of Mao Tsetung, tissue guard.
Presumed second English edition, first printing, SIGNED BY DENG XIAOPING, FUTURE LEADER OF THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY, using a three-character signature in blue ballpoint ink on the front free endpaper. Captioned by the recipient in black ballpoint ink beneath Deng's signature.
Deng's signature was obtained by Richard D. Smyser, editor of The Oak Ridger, a daily paper in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in June 1975 as a member of one of the earliest delegations of American newspaper editors to visit the People's Republic of China. The visit was arranged by the American Society of Newspaper Editors. In 1975, Deng was serving as the Republic's Deputy Premier under Chairman Mao Tsetung. A photograph of the delegation posed with Deng is included. Smyser is pictured in the front row, second from right.
Deng Xiaoping (1904-1997) was a Chinese revolutionary and statesman. He formally came to power in 1978, becoming the paramount leader after the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a position he held until 1989. Though an early supporter of Mao Tsetung, the two later had a falling out when Deng's political and economic ideologies became more right-leaning. As paramount leader, Deng introduced reforms and opening-up policies to communist China. One of his key objectives was to lessen the influence of Mao's "Little Red Book" - the very book Deng signed here. He sought to move China away from the radicalism and ideological rigidity that characterized the Cultural Revolution era under Mao Tsetung.
Deng's policies and reforms, known as the "Reform and Opening Up," were pragmatic and aimed at modernizing China's economy. He shifted the focus from class struggle and ideological purity to economic development and modernization. As part of this shift, the emphasis on the Little Red Book, a symbol of Mao's ideological influence and the Cultural Revolution, diminished significantly.
This lot is accompanied by eight original photographs from the trip, including a photograph of the delegation posed with Deng. Other photographs include a candid photo of Deng, visits to Peking University and other landmarks, and photos of Chinese villagers. The photographs are captioned by Smyser and were taken by Richard Smyser (save for three photographs in which "Dick" is pictured).
Condition: Some staining to vinyl wrappers, seemingly ink offset from newsprint. Mild toning to textblock and a few scattered spots. Photographs mounted to three-hole-punch sheets, glue beginning to weaken, some photos detaching from mounts, foxing to mounts, minor edgewear to photos.
Provenance: Richard D. Smyser, thence by descent.
