    Description

Winston S. Churchill. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. London: Cassell and Company, [1956-1958].
First editions, first impressions. Four large octavo volumes (9.5 x 6.0625 inches). Comprising, Volume I: The Birth of Britain; Volume II: The New World; Volume III: The Age of Revolution; and Volume IV: The Great Democracies. xxi, 416; xi, 344; xi, 332; xi, 322 pages. Maps and genealogical tables in the text.

Publisher's red buckram lettered in gilt on spine. Light rubbing to extremities, a few corners and spine ends bumped. Volume I with light foxing to endpapers, edges, and first and last few leaves. A very good set. In the original color pictorial dust jackets. Jackets lightly rubbed, with a few small edge chips and tears, and some slight browning and foxing. Jacket of Volume I price-clipped.

"If a potential buyer of these volumes were to ask one question: Why must they beyond any doubt find a place on my shelves?-it can be answered shortly. There has never been a history like this written by a man who has himself made history; never have the political and diplomatic decisions of the past been considered by a writer who, all his life, has had to make decisions of the same character and of the same magnitude. That alone must make this history unique" (rear flap of Volume I dust jacket).
