    First illustrated edition.

    One work in three octavo volumes with continuous pagination. iv, 512; iv, 513-1024; iv, 1025-1668 pages. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, gilt titles on spines, exploding world device in gilt on spines and blind stamped on the front covers, decorative endpapers and reading ribbons. Ownership ink stamps on upper and lower textblock edges and ink signature on each title page. Boards rubbed and soiled; signature 2Y loose from volume two, holograph pencil note on last page of volume three, few small margin tears with minor paper loss, several over-opened pages, occasional light foxing or soiling; otherwise in very good condition.

    Asad Al-Faqih graduated from high school at the top of his class then studied law at the leading French University in Lebanon, St. Joseph.Upon completing his studies, he received a work offer from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was soon appointed Attache, Vice Consul, then Consul of the Saudi delegation to Baghdad, Iraq.

    In 1945, Asad Al-Faqih was asked to join the Saudi delegation headed byHRH Prince Faisalto the San Francisco convention that created the United Nations.

    In 1946, hewas appointed by His Majesty King Abdul Aziz Al-Saud as the kingdom's firstambassador and minister plenipotentiary to the United States and the United Nations, then Canada, Mexico, and Cuba concurrently. Ambassador Al-Faqih and his family moved to Washington, DC, in 1947.

    In 1955,he became a roving ambassador for the kingdom, serving as minister plenipotentiary and inspector of embassies and foreign missions.

    In1960, he became Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.After more than 30 years of service, he took early retirement in 1962 to be with his family in Lebanon. He died inApril 1989 in California. He was survived by his wife of 58 years, five daughters and two sons. He was an avid book reader and had a collection of more than 5,000 books in his home library in Lebanon at the time of his death
