A Handsome Copy of Theobald's Works of Shakespeare

William Shakespeare. The Works of Shakespeare: in Eight Volumes. Collated with the oldest copies, and corrected: with notes, explanatory, and critical: by Mr. Theobald. The second edition. London: Printed for H. Lintott..., 1740. Second Theobald edition. Complete in eight twelvemo volumes. With thirty-seven plates (including frontispiece) engraved by and after Van der Gucht and Gravelot. Title-pages printed in red and black. Contemporary full mottled calf, covers ruled in gilt in a floral motif, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, one olive and two brown morocco gilt lettering labels, five raised bands, gilt board edges, blind turn-ins, marbled edges and endleaves. Some rubbing to bindings and hinges, upper edge of front board of volume III lightly bumped, a few boards lightly bowing outward. Some foxing in text, some upper margins in text a bit close. Bookplate in volume I. Still, a fine set.

    More Information:

"Theobald's first edition was only illustrated by a portrait but the smaller eight-volume edition of 1740 had a notable series of etchings by or after Gravelot...They changed Tonson's humble production into a work of some elegance" (Shakespeare Domesticated, p. 203). Theobald's copious footnotes were reduced in this edition, as was his lengthy preface.

    Ebisch and Schücking, p. 53. Ford, pp. 32-33. Jaggard, p. 499.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
