Description

William Preston Stapp. The Prisoners of Perote.
Containing a Journal Kept by the Author, Who Was Captured by the Mexicans, at Mier, December 25, 1842, and Released From Perote, May 16, 1844. Philadelphia: G. B. Zieber and Company, 1845. First edition. 12mo. xi, 164 pages, [4] publisher's catalog. Modern three-quarter leather binding and blue cloth boards with titles stamped in gilt between five raised spine bands. Marbled endpapers. Contents remarkably bright with only a few areas of foxing mainly at the preliminary and terminal pages. Former owner's book plate on the recto of the front free endpaper. Fine.

Stapp participated in the unsuccessful attack on the Mexican village of Mier where he and many of fellow soldiers were taken prisoner and marched to the prison at Perote near Vera Cruz. He gives a vivid first-hand account of his treatment while imprisoned. He was released as a result of the overtures of his uncle, General Milton Stapp. Stapp's book about his time in Perote was likely the first book written about the ill-fated Mier expedition.
