    Description

William Makepeace Thackeray. Vanity Fair. A Novel Without a Hero. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. First edition, later issue without "Marquis de Steyne" engraving on page 336, but with "Mr. Pitt" for "Sir Pitt" on page 453. Octavo. xvi, 624 pages. Frontispiece, vignette title-page, and thirty-eight additional inserted plates; in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's bluish-green diaper-grain cloth, decoratively blind-stamped, spine lettered in gilt; text block edges untrimmed; yellow endpapers. Binding generally discolored, worn, and soiled, with sunning to backstrip, loss at spine ends, and splitting and holes at cloth over joints; boards rubbed, with some pale splashes and specks of insect soiling; wear at edges, corners bumped, boards peeking through cloth along bottom edges and at corners. Very faint soiling to endpapers, with previous owner bookplate at front pastedown and evidence that rear pastedown was lifted and subsequently put back in place. Overall mild age dulling to text block; top edge softly darkened; occasional spot and thumbsoiling scattered throughout interior, an instance of pencil annotation. Very good text block in a good binding.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
