William J. Duane Signed Book: Narrative and Correspondence Concerning the Removal of the Deposites, and Occurrences Connected Therewith (Philadelphia: 1838), first edition, 176 pages, contemporary calf with raised bands, marbled endpapers, 8vo (5.75" x 9"), signed on a free endpaper "George Harrison, esq, With the respectful compliments of W. J. Duane- Phila April, 1839". Duane was the Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson for four months. He was (as he states in the book's introduction) "...removed from office, because I would not, prior to the meeting of Congress, transfer the public deposites from the U.S. bank to state banks." Though Duane was against the Bank and thought it unconstitutional, he felt that the sudden removal of funds would cause panic and negatively affect the common man and the farmer. This book would make very interesting reading for the historian interested in the Jacksonian era and the Bank of the United States controversy. It is in Very Good condition with some rubbing and wear to the edges and expected light foxing throughout. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
