William Hope Hodgson. Men of the Deep Waters. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1914. First edition. Signed and inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper recto, "To The Featherstonehaughs / from William Hope Hodgson. / Heytesbury / Wilts / November 1915 / 171st Brigade R.F.A." Octavo. 303, [1, imprint], [2, publisher's ads] pages. Publisher's dark red cloth, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Corners bumped and rubbed, spine sunned, moderate edgewear, head and foot of spine pushed and worn, somewhat rubbed. Cream endpapers; somewhat foxed and toned, minor soiling, remnant of glue from where included envelope was previously mounted to front pastedown, newspaper clipping of Hodgson's death announcement pasted to front free endpaper recto. Internally generally clean and tight, top edge trimmed, other edges rough trimmed; minor foxing, text block edges toned and somewhat worn. Very good.

[Together with]: Autographed letter signed and postmarked envelope from William Hope Hodgson to Captain Featherstonehaugh, 171st R.F.A. No place: 26 November 1915.
Four pages of a bifolium; pages 2-4 hand-numbered. 178 x 112 mm. Creased along old folds, somewhat foxed and soiled. With postmarked envelope addressed to "Captain Featherstonehaugh, / Officers Mess, / 171st Howitzer Brigade R.F.A. / Heytesbury / Wilts." Somewhat toned and foxed, some offsetting, cloth remnants along top edge from previous mounting. Near fine.

They say to write what you know and William Hope Hodgson was certainly no exception. Something of an adventurous heart, Hodgson traveled much of his early life and dedicated himself to new experiences, both good and ill, and many of which inspired his writing. Considering this lifestyle, it's no surprise that when he was thrown from a horse and injured severely, Hodgson would chafe at being sent home from his commission with the 171st to heal in England.

Hodgson's letter is an appeal to Captain Featherstonehaugh of the 171st for an honest answer, will he be allowed to return to the front? Hodgson seems genuinely distressed at the prospect he might be left behind, mentioning several times that he's heard a "rumour" and expressing hope that this is not the case. His sense of humor and skill at writing is reflected well here in his many nicknames and jokes for his commanding officer ("you kind hearted old bully") and his delightful descriptions ("...I get done-out when I try to use my confounded thinking box"). Though we don't have the reply, we do know Hodgson remained in England to heal, even after this missive, and did not return to the front until 1917.

Truly a unique Hodgson collectible, not only featuring a beautiful first edition of one of his tales, fondly signed and inscribed, but also with a sentimental and personal letter detailing a little documented time of Hodgson's life and displaying the depth of his interesting personality and skill for writing.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
