With Sixty Hand-Colored Aquatints of Costumes of Great Britain

William Henry Pyne. The Costume of Great Britain. Designed, Engraved and Written by W. H. Pyne. London: Published by William Miller, 1808 [Actually 1804?]. Second (third?) edition, with text watermarked 1819 (as per Abbey). The title-page of this copy is apparently supplied from a second edition (dated 1808, and it is a bit more toned than the other pages and is about a half-inch shorter). Abbey states that the first (1804, with paper watermarked 1803) and the third ([this copy?] originally with title-page dated 1804, and with paper watermarked 1819) editions are more desirable than the second edition of 1808, due to the fact that they have hand-colored backgrounds (as this copy has) which the second edition of 1808 does not. Folio. Approximately 14 x 10 inches With a hand-colored title page vignette and sixty hand-colored aquatint plates with colored backgrounds. With accompanying text pages. Contemporary full dark purple straight-grain morocco, covers elaborately ruled and paneled in gilt and blind, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, six raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt. Some rubbing and mild wear to binding, some foxing to first few and last few leaves, some offsetting to text leaves from plates. Bookplate. Still, a fine copy with clean and bright plates. Abbey, Life, 430. Tooley (1954), 388. Colas, 2447.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
