William Golding. Lord of the Flies. London: Faber and Faber, [1954]. First edition, in a first state dust jacket. Octavo. 248 pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in white, front board stamped in gilt with arms of Jesus College, Cambridge; slightly cocked, a few minor stains. Cream colored endpapers, all edges trimmed; minor foxing. Internally generally crisp and clean; small unobtrusive red stain to bottom margin of last few leaves, not affecting text. First state of the original pictorial dust jacket with a summary of the book to front flap (later states would replace the summary with small blurbs), priced 12s 6d on front flap; spine moderately toned, toning to joints and top edge, minor scattered foxing, expert repairs to top and bottom of spine panel, top and bottom joint of front flap, top of rear flap. Overall a near fine book in a very good dust jacket with expert repairs.
