Wonderful Ornamental Binding of An Essay Upon Miracles

William Fleetwood. An Essay Upon Miracles. In Two Discourses. London: Charles Harper, 1701.

First edition. Octavo. [xvi], 277 pages, [iii] contents.

Full crimson English morocco extra over boards with gilt floral design and other ornamentations. Inlays of black morocco. Six raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Beautiful wide margins with red guide lines. Front joint broken with board hanging by cords; some wear and loss to the spine ends. Corners bumped. Minor toning to edges. Bookplates on front pastedown of the Sikes Family crest and estate. Bookplate of George Eden, First Earl of Auckland on blank facing title page. With ownership signature "C. Fleetwood. xbr. 14. 1720. given to me by my mother," presumably a descendent of the author. A handsome copy in a beautiful custom binding. Very good.
