William Faulkner. Soldiers' Pay. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1926. First edition. Octavo (7.5 x 5.25 inches; 190 x 133 mm). 319, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in yellow, spine stamped in blind. Pictorial endleaves. Publisher's first state dust jacket with An American Tragedy as the first of five titles listed on the rear jacket panel. Cloth spine lightly toned; some edgewear to spine and boards; some bumping to upper edges of boards; minor bubbling or soiling to boards; front free endpaper with old writing deeply indented - this indentation bleeds onto the half-title; erasure mark on front free endpaper; a few gutters overopened; bookplate of Scott Cunningham, designed by Eric Gill, on the front pastedown. Binding slightly skewed. Dust jacket spine quite sunned and chipped; jacket panels and corners chipped; jacket edgeworn with several tears; jacket panels toned with some thumbsoiling. Still, very good. Housed in modern custom-built pictorial leather clamshell case. The author's first novel. Peterson A2.1.
