William Faulkner's First Novel, in the Rare Original Dust Jacket

William Faulkner. Soldier's Pay. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1926. First edition, first printing, one of approximately 2,500 copies printed. Octavo. 319 pages. Publisher's dark blue cloth stamped in yellow on the front cover and spine. Top edge stained yellow (though faded). Blue and white patterned endpapers. Original pictorial dust jacket. Moderate edge wear to the boards. Bookplate to front pastedown, otherwise a clean textblock. Spine of jacket faded. Some chipping to the edges of the dust jacket, including at the spine head, where it just touches the "SOLDI" in "SOLDIERS'." Short split to rear spine fold. Insignificant pencil markings to the flaps. Rear flap somewhat clumsily folded. Still, a very good copy of a title rarely ever found in jacket. "Faulkner's first novel was recommended for publication by Sherwood Anderson, for which gesture Faulkner frequently and publicly expressed his gratitude" (Peterson, A Faulkner Collector's Notebook, page 23).
