With an Incredible Inscription by William Faulkner, Which Reflects His Philosophy on Literature

William Faulkner. Sanctuary. With a New Introduction by the Author. New York: The Modern Library, [1932, actually 1940 as per Peterson]. Later edition of the Modern Library edition, in a new binding format and dust jacket. Inscribed by Faulkner on the recto of the half-title: "A book, good or bad, is an / expression of the human spirit. / This volume is inscribed in pity / for those who have suffered from oppression,/and admiration for those who have resisted / it." Additionally, it is signed by Faulkner on the facing title-page: "William Faulkner / Los Angeles, Cal / 18 Sept 1942. Small octavo. viii, 380, [7, publisher's ads], [5, blank] pages. Publisher's full green cloth, stamped in red and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine, pictorial dust jacket designed by E. McKnight Kauffer and printed on both sides. Mild sunning and wear to jacket spine, some rubbing and light edgewear to jacket, cloth spine a bit dull and with some light wear, mild wear to corners. A very good copy with an amazing inscription by Faulkner, perhaps one of the best inscriptions from him to be offered for sale in years. Petersen A8k.

    More Information:

This inscription is not unlike his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, made by him nearly eight years after this book was inscribed (on December 10, 1950). In that speech, he touches on similar themes - the indominatible nature of the human spirit, and the all-encompassing need for literature to contain compassion and pity.
