William Faulkner. Sanctuary. New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, [1931]. First edition, inscribed by the author on the half-title page: "Dr A. J. Liebmann / William Faulkner / New York / 17 March 1953." Octavo (7.1875 x 4.875 inches; 183 x 125 mm.). [iv], 380 pages. Publisher's gray quarter-cloth over dark red-paper covered boards, spine lettered in dark red; top edge stained black; patterned endpapers; in original dust jacket. Spine slightly skewed; spine ends softly pushed and faintly dulled; extremities very lightly worn. Some faint discoloration to the gray areas of the endpapers closer to the hinges; few light splashes to the bottom of the text block. Dust jacket crown chipped with paper loss affecting the title; small chip to the foot of the spine panel with some other small nicks and light edgewear; some minor brown soiling to the rear panel; spine panel slightly faded; lightly rubbed. Very good. Connolly 69 ("Sanctuary...was written in haste when Faulkner was tired of never is Faulkner for the non-Faulknerites, determined to shock.")

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
