First edition of this beautifully illustrated work. Folio (approximately 13.25 x 8.5 inches). [xiii], [1, blank], 826 [sic], [xii, Index and Table], [1, errata], 1, Notarum Explicatio] pages. Bound without final blank. With frontispiece portrait by Wenceslaus Hollar, eight folding maps or plates, one double-page plate, and nine plates inserted throughout. Title-page printed in red and black. Lavishly illustrated throughout by Hollar, including woodcut initials and head-pieces. Beautifully bound in nineteenth-century full red levant morocco, boards elaborately paneled in gilt, spine elaborately tooled or lettered in gilt in compartments, six raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves. Binding worn, joints just starting, spine a bit toned, corners bumped and worn, hinges starting, some light toning, thumbsoiling or foxing to leaves. A tear to text on pages 196, 227. Bookseller's ticket and bookplate of Joshua Hutchinson to front pastedown. Still, a near fine copy of this beautiful production. Wing D2479.
