William Dean Howells. Lives and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. Columbus: 1860. First edition, with a letter by Howells.

    More Information:

William Dean Howells. Lives and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. Colombus: Follett, Foster & Co.,1860. First edition, probable second state of page [96]. The so-called "extended" [or, "complete"] edition; due to the bibliographical confusion found by Blanck when he was researching this title, BAL is not completely certain that this version (406 pages instead of 96 pages) is a later issue of this work or not. Signed by Howells on the title-page (dated both 1860 and 1914) and with an autograph letter signed by Howells, dated March 12, 1914. Letter is one and one-half octavo pages on one quarto folded sheet. Addressed: "Dear Mr. Jackson". Octavo. 406 pages. With portraits of Lincoln and Hamlin and one other illustration inserted throughout. Publisher's full purple cloth, boards decoratively stamped in blind, spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Howells' signature on title-page is smudged. Spine sunned (text on spine virtually illegible), binding sunned and somewhat worn at edges, corners bumped, plates and some text leaves foxed. Bookplate on front pastedown. Letter has several creases. Overall, a very good item. Housed in quarter morocco clamshell case. Near fine. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.

    BAL 9538.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
