"The Fruit of Long Service Experience"

William Dalrymple. Tacticks. London: W. Faden, 1781.

First edition. Octavo. xv, [1, blank], 132 pages. Six folding plates.

Contemporary red morocco with titles and rules stamped in gilt. All edges gilt. Modest wear to the boards. Light scattered foxing. Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. A beautiful copy in near fine condition.

"Dalrymple's Tacticks was the fruit of long service experience, of wide reading among the most modern French and German theoreticians and of four seasons recently spent in the English encampments. It was Dalrymple's concern to standardize the army's maneuvers and to do so upon sound technical rules of basic movement, aware as he was that of late the British Army, compared to foreign armies, had 'not made an equal progress in its Regulations and Tacticks.' The resulting treatise was unique among all the English works that had appeared to date" (Houlding, Fit for Service, p. 237).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
