    Beautiful Hand-Colored Aquatint Plates

William Bradford. Sketches of the Country, Character, and Costume, in Portugal and Spain, made during the campaign, and on the route of the British Army, in 1808 and 1809, engraved and coloured from the drawings by the Rev. William Bradford...Chaplain of Brigade to the Expedition. London: Printed for John Booth, 1810. [Bound with:] Sketches of Military Costume in Spain and Portugal," Intended as a Supplement... London: Printed for John Booth, 1810.

Folio. 38 leaves of descriptive text, printed on one side only, numbered 1 to 38. With forty hand-colored aquatint plates and uncolored frontispiece; six pages descriptive text, thirteen hand-colored plates. The text is watermarked "1809" and the plates are watermarked "1808."

Contemporary quarter red leather binding and marbled paper over boards with ornately decorated leather title label mounted to front board. Marbled endpapers. Boards well worn, especially at the edges and corners. Loss at the spine ends with joints moderately tender. Front hinge starting, else text block is sound. Contents toned with some offsetting to plates. Very good.

First published in some twenty-four parts between 1809 and 1810, these beautiful aquatints wonderfully illustrate the people and places of Spain and Portugal during the time of the Peninsula War. Particularly remarkable are the colorful military uniform plates illustrating in exquisite detail various aspects of Spanish and Portuguese uniforms.

Tooley 107; Abbey Scenery 135. From the Juana de Laban Dance Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
