First edition, Japan Vellum issue, limited to fifty copies, of which this is number twenty-seven, and signed by the author. Octavo (9 x 6 inches; 228 x 150 mm.). [viii], 303, [1, colophon] pages, limitation leaf inserted at front. Publisher's vellum, front board double-ruled in gilt with gilt corner-pieces and central device, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, publisher's device stamped in gilt on rear board; housed in original green slipcase with printed paper label. Spine gently leaning; backstrip just a shade dulled; crown softly bumped; boards slightly splayed; a few mild creases to vellum on the boards. Slipcase darkened at the top and spine panels, as well as the margins on of board panels; upper edges splitting; one small chip to one fore-edge; small dampstain to the foot of the spine panel; some general wear.     More Information: This novel, based on the first bishop of New Mexico, is considered one of Cather's finest works, and has appeared on several lists of the best books of the twentieth century, including the Modern Library's 100 best English-language novels of the twentieth century.
