Will James. Group of Five Titles, with three signed and one in dust jacket. From the Doheny Collection, four of the volumes bearing engraved bookplates for Edward Laurence Doheny on the pastedown endpaper, and also an engraved plate for Carrie Estelle Doheny on the front free endpaper. Fifth book bears the familiar green morocco oval plate of Estelle Doheny. Titles are: Cowboys North and South. New York: Scribner's, 1926. Reprint edition, signed and dated by James on the front free endpaper. Card laid in stating: The Estelle Doheny Collection of the Edward Laurence Doheny Memorial Library (describing illustrations, by the author). [and:] The Drifting Cowboy. New York: Scribner's, 1926. Reprint edition, signed and dated by James on the front free endpaper. [and:] Smoky. The Cowhorse. New York: Scribner's, 1926. Reprint edition, signed and dated by James on the front free endpaper. Lone Cowboy. My Life Story. New York: Scribner's, 1930. Appears to be a first edition [penciled note "Book of the Month Club" on the front free endpaper]. [and:] Smoky. The Cowhorse. New York: Scribner's, 1926. First edition. Publisher's green cloth stamped in black, dust jacket. Browning and chipping around the jacket edges, else a very good copy. Condition of all copies is generally very good, with some fading, rubbing, and light soiling. A very nice group. Penciled note on the front pastedown of all five volumes: "#232 Doheny Auction 2/1/88 / (5 books purchased for $440 = $88 ea." From the collection of California bibliophile Melba Berry Bennett.
