Wilkie Collins. The Queen of Hearts. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1859. First edition. Three volumes. Octavo (7.625 x 4.875 inches; 193 x 123 mm.). [2], iii, [1], 314, 16 [ads]; [2], 359, [1]; [2], 307, [1] pages. Publisher's full blind-stamped olive cloth; spines lettered in gilt; all edges trimmed; original light yellow endpapers. Minor edge and joint wear to bindings; mild discoloration to backstrips and edges of boards; general light rubbing with a few areas of soiling; spine ends pushed; minimal loss of gilt at backstrips; gentle bumping to corners. Normal age toning to edges of text block; a bit of scuffing; top edges lightly dust soiled. Previous owner signatures to front free endpapers; occasional rough opening at fore-edges; scattered light thumbsoiling and foxing, mostly marginal; a touch of dimpling to pages, from handling. Very good. Housed in custom blue cloth chemise in one-quarter book-backed slipcase, blue morocco over blue cloth with red leather spine labels, gilt tooling, and five raised bands at spine. "The Queen of Hearts show[s] the novelist carrying farther his talent for dramatic construction and his experiments in technique. [The book contains] descriptive passages of sombre power" (Sadleir, Excursions in Victorian Bibliography, pp. 130-131, 140).
