First edition. Octavo. 66 pages. With inserted frontispiece
portrait. Bound in publisher's full burgundy cloth over beveled
boards (BAL's C binding - sequence of binding priority not
definite), front board and spine stamped in gilt. Spine a bit
sunned and rubbed, some rubbing to binding, corners bumped.

Autograph Postcard Signed by Him
[Together With:] Walt Whitman. Autograph Postcard Signed. Camden New Jersey, Tuesday pm July 17 '88. Written on verso of card; on recto is a printed one-cent postcard addressed in Whitman's hand to Charlotte Fiske Bates in Cambridge, Mass. Ink cancels. Approximately 3 x 5 inches. Card is tipped-in the book at the front hinge. "Thanks dear friend for/the sweet-faced & fragrant/pinks now before me-/I have been & am ill/but may yet rally-/Walt Whitman". Several places where the ink is smudged, card toned and lightly thumbsoiled. Fiske-Bates was a poet and educator, who had strong literary connections.
