    Walt Whitman. Complete Poems & Prose of Walt Whitman 1855...1888. [Camden: privately printed, 1988]. Seventh edition, thirteenth printing of Leaves of Grass [Philadelphia: Ferguson Bros. & Co., Printers, 1988], together with Specimen Days & Collect and November Boughs. Collection limited to 600 copies, of which this is number 188, signed by the author on the title page of Leaves of Grass, and additionally inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Dr O W True / from the author / Aug : 17 '89." Large octavo. [ii], [1]-382, [vi], 7-374, [1]-140, [1]-2 (note at the end). General title on coated paper and three additional illustrated plates inserted throughout, including frontispiece for November Boughs. Publisher's dark green half-cloth over marbled paper-covered boards, paper label to spine, top edge rough cut, others untrimmed, white endpapers and flyleaves, both BAL and Myerson's A binding. Boards lightly rubbed, edges and joints worn, small chip to inside of edge marbled paper on front board, spine slightly creased with wear at ends, title label worn at edges with interior bruising and slight paper loss. Front hinge cracked, two newspaper clippings tipped to front flyleaf with corresponding offsetting, rear hinge strengthened with glue applied between rear endpaper and flyleaf at gutter. Minor holographic pencil annotations throughout. Very good, chemised and housed in cloth slipcase.

    Referred to as "big book" in Whitman's daybook, he recorded the act of sending this copy to J. H. Clifford in Farmington, Maine, by Express for Dr. O W True on August 17th, 1889, the date of the inscription in this copy. (White, Daybooks and Notebooks, Volume II, pages 528-529). BAL 21431.
