    W. W. Denslow. Original Ink Caricature Drawing. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1895]. From the collection of Zita Books.

    More Information:

One folio sheet of stiff paper. Approximately 12.25 x 8.5 inches. Drawing is a caricature of a man standing by a model of a theater, Niblo's, which closed in 1895. Signed by Denslow in the lower right corner. Small embossed stamp in upper right corner, small chip missing from upper left corners, thumbsoiling, a few small marginal pin holes. Some erased pencil notes. Overall, a very good drawing.

William Wallace Denslow was a preeminent political cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator. It is believed that he met L. Frank Baum at the Chicago Press Club where both were members, where they began a friendship as well as a working relationship.  For Baum, Denslow illustrated The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, By the Candelabra's Glare, Father Goose: His Book, and Dot and Tot of Merryland. They held the copyrights of most of these works jointly. Denslow and Baum had a falling-out in 1902 over royalties for the stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz and they never worked together again. Denslow illustrated many children's books and comic strips (some featuring the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman) and a comic strip entitled Billy Bounce (one of the earliest comic strips with a character has some degree of super powers). His royalties from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz allowed Denslow to purchase Bluck's Island in Bermuda (where he crowned himself King Denslow I).
