Trade edition, early reprint, printed under war-time restrictions with notice on the copyright page and jacket, still priced $2.75, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For Louis / With all the good wishes of / his friend / W. Somerset Maugham," dated June 12, 1944, within two months of the book's initial publication. Octavo (7.75 x 5.125 inches; 198 x 143 mm.). [vi], 343, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, front board stamped in blind; fore-edge of text block untrimmed; in original dust jacket. Spine gilt slightly dulled; spine ends lightly worn with some minor fraying to the bottom edge; corners very lightly worn; top corners just barely bent. Page edges and margins faintly tanned; half-title and title leaves creased vertically. Dust jacket folded in fours and creased; edges worn, particularly at spine ends and upper edge of front panel; tear with a small scab to the bottom edge of the front panel, upper edge of rear panel chipped; light flaking to folds; rear flap fold slightly tanned; very light marginal soiling to rear panel. Very good overall, chemised in a custom slipcase. Toole Scott A63b (first trade printing).
