    W. Somerset Maugham. The Painted Veil. London: Heinemann, [1925]. First English edition, second issue, first state. Publisher's blue cloth. A near fine copy in a lightly chipped dust jacket.

    More Information:

First English edition, second issue, first state with a Colonial Edition sticker over the price on the dust jacket spine. Octavo. 289 pages.

Publisher's blue cloth with gold and black stamping. Cloth lightly rubbed along edges. Foxing to page edges. Dust jacket is lightly chipped on spine ends and corners; light soiling on rear panel and spine. There is a one-inch by one-half-inch pull on the front flap, probably from a removed sticker. Overall, a near fine copy in the scarce dust jacket.

A libel suit and then a complaint from the Hong Kong Government caused Heinemann to create five states of The Painted Veil in order to finally release it. The attention created in the media by these actions only helped the sales of the book, pleasing Maugham greatly. In a letter to a friend, he wrote: "I got something like 500 pounds of free advertisement and the book went with a bang."
