An Inscribed Copy of Maugham's First Novel

    W. Somerset Maugham. Liza of Lambeth. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1897.

First edition, first issue. Signed by Maugham and inscribed, "Remembering the thrill it was / to receive the first copies of this / book, more than fifty years ago, / I think it is now with something / like dismay. / by / W. Somerset Maugham / 24 August 1949." Octavo. 242 pages.

Publisher's pale green cloth stamped in gold on front and spine. Cover illustration of Liza in coster costume by Maugham's friend, English artist Henry Bishop. Front board has three one-eighth-inch blemishes. Cloth is mildly rubbed along the edges and corners, and page edges are lightly soiled. Housed in a custom full green morocco slipcase with chemise. A far tighter, brighter copy than is typically encountered of this scarce title. Better than very good, bordering on near fine.

This, Maugham's first novel, is set in the slums of Lambeth, a London borough. Maugham drew on his time as a medical student at St. Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth, and his first-hand observations of the area's working class added great realism to this somewhat lurid (and exceptionally popular) story of adultery and its consequences.
