The "Exceedingly Scarce" First Issue, Signed by Maugham

    W. Somerset Maugham. Cosmopolitans. London: Heinemann, [1936].

First edition, first issue. Signed by Maugham on the title page. Octavo. 302 pages.

Publisher's blue cloth with stamping in gold and black. Cloth is lightly rubbed and darkened along the spine. There is a half-inch tear to the top of the spine. Endpapers are toned along the edges. Dust jacket is darkened along the edges and spine, and there are several small chips to the jacket, including a half-inch chip out of the upper spine. Very good.

A collection of twenty-nine short stories written by Maugham for Cosmopolitan magazine between 1923 and 1929. This is the scarce first issue, with pages 5-6 uncancelled and seventeen non-dramatic works listed on the verso of the half-title page. Stott writes: "The first issue is exceedingly scarce. I have only met with one copy" (Stott A51). Though not well-received by critics, it was on the basis of Cosmopolitans that Christopher Morley nominated Maugham as the most readable writer of his time.

Stott A50b. Morgan, p. 391. From the Collection of Norman F. Moore.
