The Rare First Edition of V. I. Lenin's First Book
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov ["Lenin"]. Razvitie
Kapitalizma v Rossi [The Development of
Capitalism in Russia - the Process of the Formation of the Internal
Market for Large-Scale Industry]. St. Petersburg: A.
Leifert, 1899. First edition of Lenin's first book, one of 2,400
copies. Octavo. [2, blank], ix, [1,blank], iv, 480, viii, [1,
blank], [1, errata], [1, blank] pages. With a fold-out table and
two plates (one fold-out) inserted throughout. Bound in
contemporary Russian quarter black morocco over red cloth boards.
Binding quite worn, some chipping at spine, remnants of later paper
label on spine, neat cloth tape repairs to title-page and the
following leaf at gutters, some toning, soiling and foxing to text,
some soiling, wear to plates and table. Still, a very good example
of this scarce item. Now housed in full red morocco clamshell case.
Lenin (1870-1924) researched and wrote this book while either in prison or in exile for his political views. It sold quite well, being widely circulated to the intelligentsia (including radical students and workers). This book was published three years before he wrote the groundbreaking book of the Bolshevist movement ("What Is to be Done" [translated from the Russian], 1902, PMM 392).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
