Vincenzo Cartari. Le Imagini dei de gli Antichi. Nelle Quali Si Contengono gl'Idoli, Riti, Ceremonie, & altre cose appartenenti all Religione de gli Antichi, Racolte dal Sig. Octavo. Eighty-eight full page engravings. Printer's device on title page (Silvestre 977), engraved initials, head and tail pieces.

*-3*8, 4*4, [4*4 blank], a-z8, A-F8, G8 [G7 & 8 blanks]. [56], 474 pages. Modern calf-backed marbled boards, title on label, red edges, tall copy with some deckled edges at lower edge, light even paper toning.

Binding lightly rubbed and scuffed; paper thickness varies; some plates and pages appear lighter, while other plates have image bleedthrough to the opposite side of their leaf; some pages with edge wear and minor creases, few small edge tears, minor foxing and smudges, light dampstains and occasional soiling, minor paper loss in lower corner of p3 not affecting text, untrimmed white mesh netting (a binding artifact?) visible at junction between leaves G2 and G3. Nonetheless, very good.

"First encyclopedia of Classical iconography." Arntzen & Rainwater.

Italian edition published by Michele in the same year he issued a French and Latin editions. The cuts are based on those of Bolognino Zalteri printed in the Venice 1571 edition with some revision for modesty's sake.

Cartari's (born circa 1500) work on the gods and their symbols is a key work in the history of symbolism in the Renaissance and the manual for artists as to the proper attributes of the deities. [See Seznec's The Survival of the Pagan Gods for a full discussion of the importance of this text.]
