Victor L. Whitechurch. Thrilling Stories of the Railway. London: C. Arthur Pearson, 1912. First edition. Octavo (7.25 x 4.875 inches; 184 x 124 mm.). 248, [8, advertisements] pages (note: wrappers included in pagination). In-text plans. Publisher's perfect binding; original illustrated paper wrappers. All edges trimmed. Housed in custom book-backed slipcase, one-quarter reddish-brown leather over brown cloth, brown leather spine label stamped in gilt. Several soft creases to wrappers; light edge wear with some paper loss at corners and spine ends; rear wrapper appears to have been reattached with glue visible along backstrip; general mild rubbing with very little color loss; two short tears to rear wrapper. Text block edges toned and somewhat darkened, particular at top; rubbing and softening, particularly at corners, with a handful of bumps and scuff marks. Normal age toning to interior of text block; occasional soft creasing. Very good. Whitechurch's collected stories featuring his detective Thorpe Hazell, a railway expert. They were later adapted for radio. Rare, with only one previous auction record in Rare Book Hub, describing a copy rebound in custom boards. No records in the original wrappers. Queen's Quorum 51.
