Vicente Filisola. Representacion Dirigida Al Supremo Gobierno por en General Vicente Filisola, en Defensa de su Honor y Aclaracion de sus Operaciones como General en Gefe del Ejército Sobre Tejas. Mexico: Impreso por Egnacio Cumplido, 1836. First edition. 8vo. 82pp. Older half morocco binding by Stikeman & Company [New York] with marbled boards and titles stamped in gilt between two raised bands on the spine. Externally near fine with only light shelf wear at the extremities. Contents bright with minor foxing to a few preliminary and terminal pages. Front hinge cracked but the overall integrity of the book is not compromised. Pages 27-30 are missing. Taken in total, a near fine copy of this important work.

Vicente Filisola, an Italian by birth, joined the Spanish army in 1804 and worked his way up through the ranks (and through many wars) becoming General Antonio López de Santa Anna's second in command during the revolution in Texas. After Santa Anna's capture at the battle of San Jacinto, he was responsible for the withdrawal of Mexican troops from Texas. As a result, Filisola was accused of being a traitor and coward and faced formal charges upon his return to Mexico. The present work, written in 1836, was Filisola's apologia for his actions - Representation Directed to the Supreme Government by General Vicente Filisola, a Defense of His Honor and Explanation of His Operations as General and Commander of the Army On the Evacuation of Texas. It was translated into English and published by the Republic of Texas the following year as Evacuation of Texas, the first book published in the new republic. Filisola was ultimately successfully in defending himself before a court martial and was exonerated in 1841. An extremely important edition in the literature of the Texas Revolution.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
